Basic RiderCourse (BRC)

Course Description

This course is designed for beginning riders ages 15 and older, and those riders who need a refresher on the basic fundamentals of riding. Students must have a driver education completion certificate or a valid driver’s license. We supply the bikes, you supply the desire. Whether you're new to the riding scene or have been riding for years without formal training, this course is for you. The age range of students trained in this course last year was 16 to 67! Several of our students have a motorcycle endorsement on their license but never actually took any training. These students who were "grandfathered in" find this course invaluable in developing good riding skills and preparing themselves mentally to ride.

This is a demanding course. Basic skills are learned first and then after these have been mastered, the students move onto advanced techniques. If a student cannot master the basic skills in the short time they have to learn them, they may be asked to voluntarily remove themselves from the course, practice what they've learned thus far, and come back for another course in the future. Students should be in good health before considering taking this course.

The main objectives of this course are:

  • Develop a safe, responsible motorcyclist
  • Develop the mental skills for safe motorcycling
  • Develop the physical skills for safer motorcycling
  • Create an understanding of risk awareness and risk taking
  • Develop a strategy to manage risk

We start by teaching the four basic riding skills:

  • straight line riding
  • stopping
  • turning
  • shifting

After establishing a proper foundation of basic skills, students learn advanced riding techniques and strategies to manage the risks involved with riding. The BRC is a 20 hour course given over a weekend. It includes 8 hours of classroom work and 12 hours of riding instruction on the range. We give the written and riding tests required by the state to receive a motorcycle endorsement. No further testing is required upon successful completion of our BRC class. Most classes run Friday 5:45 PM to 9:30 PM, Saturday 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM, and Sunday 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM. Check your course information when it is mailed to you for exact times.

Course Cost

The course costs $275.00*, but remember, we supply the motorcycles and all classroom materials. If you need to borrow a helmet, we have a good selection to choose from. A full refund will be issued to students who cancel 7 days or more prior to the course date. A 25% processing fee will be charged on cancelations between 2 and 7 days prior to the course date. Fees for cancelations within 48 hours of the course will not be refunded. Once you begin the course, you will not be refunded your enrollment fee if you fail or quit.

Three Wheel Basic RiderCourse (3WBRC)

Course Description

This course is designed for beginning riders who wish to only receive three wheel motorcycle training, or for two wheel riders who wish to gain new skills or transition to a three wheel motorcycle. Like the 2 Wheel BRC, the course is designed to gain basic riding skills, as well as skills unique to a three wheel motorcycle. The 3WBRC is a 20-22 hour course, consisting of 8 hours of classroom work and 10-12 hours of riding instruction.

S.M.A.R.T. provides the three wheel motorcycles, and if you need to borrow a helmet we will loan you one for the duration of the course. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a MSF Completion Card that will allow them to get the 3Wheel endorsement on their driver’s license. Note: If a student already has the “M” endorsement on their driver’s license it will also allow them to ride a 3 wheel motorcycle.
